AASHTO Flexible Pavement Design Excel Spreadsheet: Development, Validation, and Application
The 1993 guide has a drainage coefficient table (m2, m3) from 0.40 (poor drainage) to 1.40 (excellent). Spreadsheets often:
A top-tier AASHTO flexible pavement spreadsheet includes: aashto flexible pavement design excel spreadsheet
| Feature | Benefit | |---------|---------| | Drop-down drainage table | Prevents incorrect m-values | | Seasonal MR adjustment | Computes effective MR from monthly MR values | | Solver add-in automation | One-click SN calculation without circular refs | | Layer thickness rounding | Rounds to nearest 0.5 inch (practical construction) | | Minimum thickness check | Warns if D1 < 2″ (HMA) or D2 < 4″ (base) | | Chart: SN vs. ESALs | Visual sensitivity for design life | | Comparison with 1986/2002 guides | Side-by-side tabs for method validation |
I tested a representative “AASHTO 1993 Flexible Design v4.2” spreadsheet from a public repository: Error = 0
Inputs: (W_18=5\times10^6), (R=90%) ((Z_R=-1.282)), (S_o=0.45), (\Delta PSI=2.0) (4.5→2.5), (M_R=10,000 psi)
Results:
Error = 0.5% → Acceptable. However, when I set (S_o=0.35) (rigid pavement value by mistake), the spreadsheet did not flag the misuse.
This sheet contains user-defined variables, protected from accidental formula deletion. Reliability:
| Tool | Pros | Cons | |------|------|------| | Excel Spreadsheet | Transparent, free, flexible | No seasonal/mechanistic, easy to break formulas | | PaveXpress (web) | Guided inputs, AASHTO 1993/2017, no install | Internet required, limited sensitivity | | AASHTOWare Pavement ME | MEPDG, climate, traffic spectra | Steep learning curve, expensive (>$5k/year) | | PavementDesigner.org | Free, 1993 method, layer optimization | Less customization, no VBA |
