While the "Bande Dessinée" of Europe and the adult manga of Japan are celebrated as art forms, the Bengali adult comic exists in a liminal space of nostalgia and obscenity. This paper investigates the trajectory of adult-oriented comics in the Bengali linguistic sphere (West Bengal and Bangladesh) from the 1980s to the early 2000s. Moving beyond the children-centric adventures of Nonte-Phonte or Handa-Bhonda, this study focuses on "pulp" and "pornographic" comics that defined a specific male lifestyle. Using textual analysis of rare archival materials (e.g., Bheri, Deb Sahitya Kutir publications) and ethnographic interviews with readers, we argue that the Bengali adult comic served three distinct functions: 1) A manual for urban male "escapism" during economic stagnation; 2) A subversive space for sexual humor hidden within the guise of "joint family drama"; and 3) An entertainment medium that ultimately collapsed due to the twin pressures of VHS pornography and digital media. The paper concludes that the erasure of this genre from "respectable" Bengali literary history represents a cultural anxiety regarding the intersection of vernacular language and adult visuality.
