It’s the voice acting. The VA for Uryu nails the mixture of aristocratic poise and raw desperation. When he says, “Ikaw ay isang halimaw, Mayuri,” (You are a monster, Mayuri), you feel the decades of Quincy hatred compressed into one sentence.
Meanwhile, Mayuri’s Tagalog voice actor is gloriously unhinged. The laugh is there. The creepy, condescending tone when he says “Ang katawan ng isang Quincy ay isang specimen na dapat pag-aralan” (A Quincy's body is a specimen to be studied) makes your skin crawl.
