Beneath the surface vulgarity, Dikkenek offers a critique of toxic masculinity, performative bravado, and the mundane brutality of everyday life. The characters’ inflated self-images collide with petty realities: unemployment, failed relationships, and social awkwardness. By exaggerating these traits, the film exposes the emptiness behind posturing while also celebrating the chaotic humanity of its characters. The Version Longue accentuates this ambivalence: prolonged scenes let the viewer linger on both the cruelty and the tenderness that occasionally peek through.

The film also functions as a portrait of contemporary Belgian urban life — a multicultural, bilingual setting where identity is negotiated through language, humor, and social posturing. Its episodic form mirrors the fragmented interactions of city living and emphasizes everyday absurdities.

The title comes from the Flemish word dikkenek, meaning "fat neck"—slang for a big-headed, boastful, larger-than-life character. The film revolves around two polar opposites: Claudy Focan (Couchard), an insufferable, motor-mouthed narcissist who believes he’s the universe’s gift to women, conversation, and tavern stools; and Stef (Jérémie Renier), his gentle, introverted friend who just wants to find love. The plot, such as it is, follows Stef’s awkward romance with a quirky florist, while Claudy bulldozes through Brussels, leaving chaos, laughter, and bruised egos in his wake.
