Discografia: Santa Sabina
This album proved that Santa Sabina didn’t need distortion to be heavy. It is their most intimate and emotionally direct work. However, lack of promotion from BMG led to it being their last album on a major label.
The Sound: Live, fragile, definitive. Key Tracks: Estando Aquí No Estoy (Live), Vaquero
This is not a studio album, but it is the essential document. Recorded live in Mexico City, the acoustic arrangements strip away the gothic effects. Rita Guerrero’s voice is front and center—no reverb to hide behind.
The version of "Estando Aquí No Estoy" is devastating. Without the electric distortion, it becomes a confession. You hear the audience hold their breath.
This album also includes "Vaquero" (Cowboy), a cover of a Mexican folk song, transformed into a lullaby for the damned. It shows that Santa Sabina was always, underneath the darkness, a band of traditional Mexican sentimiento. discografia santa sabina
The Sound: Mature, resigned, luminous. Key Tracks: El Ojo, Rota
Released the same year Rita Guerrero lost her battle with cancer, Espiral is a miracle. Recorded while she was ill, her voice is thinner, more vulnerable, but infinitely wiser.
"Rota" (Broken) is the final song. It starts as a simple piano ballad. Rita sings: "Estoy rota / pero no vencida" (I am broken / but not defeated). Halfway through, the band erupts—not in rage, but in celebration. It is not a death wail. It is a victory lap.
The album ends with a minute of silence. Then, a hidden track: Rita laughing in the studio. This album proved that Santa Sabina didn’t need
Feature angle: Espiral won the Latin Grammy for Best Alternative Album in 2012. Rita received it posthumously. Her brother accepted it, crying.
The Sound: Live, fragile, definitive
