By analyzing the film’s cyclical narrative structure, the recurring motif of the interrupted meal, and the juxtaposition of absurdity with diplomatic decorum, this study argues that Buñuel exposes the bourgeoisie not as a pillar of societal stability, but as a hollow performative act. The film dismantles the myth of bourgeois efficiency, revealing a social class defined by hypocrisy, sexual frustration, and a profound existential boredom.

While Buñuel’s earlier works, such as L’Age d’Or, attacked the church and state with violent imagery, The Discreet Charm utilizes a more subtle, though no less scathing, approach. The film follows a group of six bourgeois friends—Ambassador Rafael Acosta, the Sénéchals, and the Thévenots—as they attempt, and repeatedly fail, to have dinner together.
