Earlier versions required manual mapping for many Bluetooth controllers. With 3.8, controllers such as the 8BitDo Pro 2, Xbox One S, and DualShock 4 are auto-detected and mapped correctly. The hotkey system (default: Select + Start to exit games) is also more responsive.

EmuELEC 3.8 represents a mature stage in the development cycle. While version 4.0 and above were rebuilt on a newer Linux kernel (Kernel 5.4) to support newer devices, version 3.8 is built on Kernel 4.9. For older Amlogic boxes—like the popular S905W boxes (e.g., Tanix TX3 Mini) or S905X boxes (e.g., Nexbox A95X)—the 3.8 version is often more stable. It has had years of bug fixes and fine-tuning, resulting in a "plug-and-play" experience for older hardware. emuelec 38 top

By the time EmuELEC reached version 3.8, the development team had ironed out many of the growing pains from earlier 3.x releases. Earlier versions (3.0–3.5) suffered from inconsistent Bluetooth controller support, occasional audio desync in PlayStation 1 games, and unreliable N64 emulation. Version 4.0, while newer, introduced more aggressive kernel changes that broke compatibility with some older but perfectly capable S905X boxes. Consequently, 3.8 remains the “sweet spot” —it runs on nearly all S905W/S905X/S912 devices, requires minimal tinkering, and offers performance that feels genuinely polished.
