Segunda parte — “El corazón en llamas”
Tercera parte — “Fuego”
Para que sea el BEST resumen, dividimos la historia en las tres partes que estructuran la novela.
The story begins with Guy Montag returning home from his job as a fireman. He takes pleasure in his work of burning books. On his way home, he meets his new neighbor, 17-year-old Clarisse McClellan. Clarisse is free-spirited and asks Montag penetrating questions: "Are you happy?" This question haunts Montag.
Montag returns home to find his wife, Mildred, unconscious from an overdose of sleeping pills. Emergency technicians revive her casually, indicating this is a common occurrence. Over the next few days, Montag realizes he is not happy. He witnesses a woman who refuses to leave her home as the firemen prepare to burn it. She lights the match herself, dying with her books. Montag, shaken, steals a book from the scene.
Clarisse suddenly disappears. Montag’s captain, Beatty, visits him and explains the history of their society: people stopped reading because of shorter attention spans, the rise of mass media, and the desire to avoid offending anyone. Beatty implies he knows Montag is confused.
