FreeMeshX is a freeware terrain mesh replacement package designed for Microsoft Flight Simulator X (FSX), Flight Simulator X: Steam Edition (FSX:SE), and Prepar3D (P3D). It replaces the default, lower-resolution elevation data with High-Definition (HD) terrain mesh.
For flight simmers still operating on the FSX/P3D platform, FreeMeshX is widely considered the best "bang-for-your-buck" freeware solution for improving terrain visual fidelity without spending money on payware alternatives like ORBX.
The most topographically prominent peak in the lower 48. The default mesh makes Rainier look like a white paint splat. With FreemeshX, you see the correct subsidiary peaks (Little Tahoma) and the massive Edmonds Glacier.
The visual improvement is immediate and drastic, particularly in mountainous regions.
