Let’s walk through an actual workflow to ensure your model is perfectly geo-located.
Step 1: Open the Map
Open your model. Go to File > Geolocation > Add Location.
Step 2: Search for Your Site In the new dialog box, type the address (e.g., "Times Square, New York" or "Eiffel Tower, Paris"). Press Enter. The map will pan to that location. geolocation sketchup 2021
Step 3: Select the Import Region Unlike older versions, SketchUp 2021 allows you to drag a bounding box. Use the blue pins to adjust the area.
Step 4: Import Click the "Import" button (blue button in the bottom right). SketchUp will now download the satellite image and place it flat on the ground plane.
Step 5: Obtain Terrain If you want elevation data (hills, valleys): Date: October 26, 2023 Subject: Workflow, Data Accuracy,
Note: In SketchUp 2021, terrain data is only available in the USA and select European countries via this native tool. For other regions, you may need a third-party extension.
Understanding this distinction is crucial. In SketchUp 2020 and 2021, the Add Location tool uses static map tiles. The data does not auto-update. If the trees on the site are cut down in real life, your SketchUp texture won’t change.
In SketchUp 2022 and later, Trimble replaced this with a dynamic, subscription-based service that streams higher-resolution 3D mesh data. However, many professionals stick with SketchUp 2021 because: Step 4: Import Click the "Import" button (blue
Unlike the completely rebuilt "Trimble Connect" geolocation system in SketchUp 2023 and beyond, SketchUp 2021 relies on the classic "Add Location" tool powered by legacy Google Maps and USGS topography data.
Geolocation is the process of assigning real-world latitude and longitude coordinates to your SketchUp model. When you geolocate a model, SketchUp 2021 does two critical things:
Without geolocation, the "Shadow" toolbar merely simulates a generic northern hemisphere sun. With it, your shadows become scientifically accurate, allowing for solar studies, photovoltaic panel placement, and passive heating design.
To maximize the utility of geo-location in SketchUp 2021, the following protocols are recommended:
In SketchUp 2021, geolocation is more than just a digital pin on a map. It is a critical feature for architects, urban planners, and landscape designers who need real-world context for their models. By adding geographic location, you ensure accurate sun angles for shadow studies, correct terrain elevation, and a reliable reference for scale and orientation.
