The first paradox of reaching the edge of the universe is that you never arrive. The “edge” is not a cosmic shoreline with a sign reading “Here ends space.” It is a horizon of time. Our journey is a pilgrimage toward our own origin. Every step outward is a step backward into the nursery of existence. In a year obsessed with personal pasts and collective trauma, this cosmic archaeology offered a strange comfort: our beginnings, however violent (the Big Bang), were also moments of immense creative potential.

Every journey implies a return. But you cannot return from the edge of the universe, not physically. The expansion of space (accelerating due to dark energy) means that most galaxies are already receding faster than light. The edge is not a destination; it is a farewell. In 2021, we learned to say goodbye to normalcy, to old routines, to the illusion of control. Similarly, a journey to the cosmos’s limit is a farewell to the idea that we are the center of anything. The cosmos ends, in a very real sense, inside your own perception. In 2021, as we sat in our rooms, masked and hesitant, we could close our eyes and traverse 93 billion light-years in a heartbeat. We discovered that the universe’s edge is not a place of terror or emptiness, but of profound, quiet awe.

2021-aisiais neįvyko „žvaigždžių karo“ tipo šuolių per hipererdvę. Tačiau įvyko kažkas ne ką mažiau svarbaus: mokslininkai pirmą kartą aptiko molekules svetimoje planetoje (Veneroje – fosfiną, nors vėliau ginčytasi), o fizikai tęsė pasaulio supratimą ieškodami tamsiosios medžiagos. Kelionė į Visatos pakraštį vis dar lieka minties eksperimentu, bet kiekvienais metais – tarp jų ir 2021-aisiais – tas kraštas tampa vis aiškesnis.
