The E--05 error frequently appears when batteries drop below 1.35V (for an SR44) or 2.8V (for a CR2032). The caliper has enough power to light the LCD but not enough to generate the stable high-frequency oscillator needed for capacitive sensing. This produces erratic reference signals.
The Mitutoyo caliper error code E--05 is intimidating when it first appears, but it is almost always a temporary, user-correctable condition. In the vast majority of cases, pulling the battery for 60 seconds and cleaning the beam will bring your precision tool back to life.
Remember: E--05 is the caliper’s way of saying, "Slow down, operator. I want to be accurate for you."
Take a breath, reset the tool, and respect the speed limit of your instrument. Your Mitutoyo caliper will likely continue to deliver trusted, repeatable measurements for another decade.

If your caliper has been dropped, the stainless steel scale might be nicked or the glass scale (inside the sealed frame) cracked. A deep scratch or dent physically interrupts the capacitive grid.
Diagnosis: Examine the entire length of the beam with a magnifying glass. If you see a gouge, the caliper is likely beyond economical repair unless you replace the main beam (which often costs as much as a new caliper).
Perform these checks before declaring the unit unrepairable:
