The Muwatta is one of the earliest collections of Hadith and Islamic jurisprudence (Fiqh). It was originally compiled by Imam Malik ibn Anas in Medina. However, Imam Malik had many students who transmitted his work. Among the most famous transmitters were Yahya al-Laithi (whose version is standard in the Maliki madhhab) and Imam Muhammad ibn al-Hasan al-Shaybani.

Imam Muhammad al-Shaybani (132–189 AH) was a direct student of Imam Malik and the primary student of Imam Abu Hanifa. His narration of the Muwatta is unique because it preserves Imam Malik’s teachings through the lens of the Hanafi school of thought.
