Here is the standard methodology used by the community to flash a custom ROM onto the Lumia 520. We will use the example of flashing a "Full Android 4.4.4 Image" as it is the most common project.

The first boot of a custom ROM on the Lumia 520 can take 5-10 minutes. Do not pull the battery. If you see a "NOKIA" logo followed by a blinking red LED, you have a kernel panic (bad ROM version). If you see the Android boot animation, you have succeeded.

You cannot install Android on the Lumia 520.

While there are custom ROMs available, they are all based on Windows Phone. There is no stable, functional port of Android for this device. Attempts to port Android to the Lumia 520 series (Project Astoria or similar hacks) resulted in bricked phones or devices with non-working Wi-Fi, audio, and cellular data.

Officially, Microsoft blocked the Windows 10 Mobile upgrade for the Lumia 520. The reason was simple: 512MB of RAM. The official requirement for Windows 10 Mobile was 1GB. Microsoft argued the OS would be too slow, unstable, and multitasking would suffer.

But the custom ROM community saw a different logic. The Lumia 520’s Snapdragon S4 chipset was architecturally identical to the Lumia 630 and 730 (which did get the update). The only bottleneck was RAM management. Developers asked: What if we re-wrote the registry and tricked the updater?

In the pantheon of legendary smartphones, the Nokia Lumia 520 holds a unique seat. Released in 2013, it wasn't a flagship. It was the people’s champion. With a 4-inch WVGA display, 512MB of RAM, and a dual-core Snapdragon S4 Plus chipset, it was modest even by 2013 standards. Yet, it became the best-selling Windows Phone device globally.

But what happens when Microsoft pulls the plug on Windows Phone 8.1? For most users, the Lumia 520 became an e-waste relic. For a dedicated community of developers, however, it became a challenge. The result is one of the most fascinating custom ROM stories in mobile history: forcibly upgrading the unsupported Lumia 520 to Windows 10 Mobile (and beyond).

If you want to tinker with a Lumia 520 today, don't aim for Android. Aim for Full Unlock.

  • Legacy App Sideload: Since the store is down, you will need to source XAP files from archives. With an Interop Unlocked device, you can install homebrew apps like "Screen Recorder" or old emulators that ran on Windows Phone 8.
  • Most custom ROMs for the Lumia 520 come as a .ffu (Windows Flash Update) file or a .img for DD.
