Abstract: This paper challenges the traditional binary depiction of Giovanni as a mere villain in the Pokémon franchise. By analyzing in-game dialogue from Pokémon Red/Blue, FireRed/LeafGreen, the Pokémon Adventures manga, and canonical anime flashbacks (e.g., Pokémon Origins), we reconstruct Giovanni’s childhood during the post-war Kanto/Johto economic depression. We argue that his adoption of Mewtwo, the dissolution of Team Rocket’s original humanitarian front, and his eventual disappearance after the Viridian Gym battle are not random acts but predictable outcomes of complex trauma and survivor’s guilt.
