Sexuele Voorlichting (1991) represents a foundational piece of health education history. While medical understandings and social attitudes toward gender and sexuality have evolved significantly since 1991, the core biological information presented in the film remains scientifically accurate. Its legacy lies in its humane approach to a confusing time of life, teaching millions of students that the changes of puberty are a universal and manageable part of the human experience.

The tone is clinical, respectful, and reassuring. Unlike many American educational films of the same era which often relied on fear-tactics regarding pregnancy or disease, or "street-smart" humor, this Dutch-produced film is notably matter-of-fact. It treats the adolescent body with dignity, aiming to reduce shame.

If we refuse to include relationships and romantic storylines in voorlichting, the entertainment industry will continue to do it for us. The consequences are already visible: rising rates of "situationship" anxiety, the normalization of ghosting, and the belief that love should be a constant emotional crisis.

Without narrative education, teens do not have the vocabulary to say, "My relationship feels wrong, but it looks exactly like the romantic storyline in my favorite show." They stay too long. They forgive the unforgivable. They chase drama, mistaking it for passion.
