The sone is a unit of perceived loudness. Unlike decibels (dB), which measure sound pressure level (SPL) on a logarithmic scale, the sone scale is linear. By definition, a sound of 1 sone is arbitrarily set to be the loudness of a 1,000 Hz tone at 40 dB SPL. A sound measured at 2 sones is perceived as twice as loud to the human ear.
