The company sets out to reclaim the Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor (the Lonely Mountain) from the dragon Smaug. The journey is perilous almost immediately. They are captured by three trolls (Tom, Bert, and William) who plan to eat them. Bilbo stalls the trolls with clever talk until Gandalf tricks them into arguing until sunrise, turning them to stone.

Inside the trolls' cave, the group discovers swords of Elvish make. Thorin takes the sword Orcrist (the Goblin-cleaver), Gandalf takes Glamdring (the Foe-hammer), and Bilbo takes a short blade that he later names Sting.

Seeking shelter, Gandalf leads the group to Rivendell, the home of the Elves. There, they meet Lord Elrond. While the dwarves are impatient to leave, Gandalf attends a meeting of the White Council with Elrond, Galadriel, and Saruman the White. Gandalf reveals his fear that the dark presence in the ruins of Dol Guldur is the Necromancer, an ancient evil that must be dealt with. The council is skeptical and warns against the quest, but Gandalf supports Thorin’s cause to prevent a war in the North.
