The Qin Empire (221–206 BCE) was short but revolutionary. Under Emperor Qin Shi Huang, China standardized writing, currency, weights, measures, and even axle widths. The Qin’s obsession with uniformity created the first bureaucratic state.
There is no evidence that the Qin spoke Khmer. However, archaeological finds in southern China (Yunnan, Guangxi) show bronze drums with decorations reminiscent of both early Chinese and proto-Khmer art. Some linguists propose a “Kradai-Austroasiatic” sprachbund (linguistic area) where ancient Chinese dialects influenced Khmer lexicon.
For example, the Old Chinese word for “salt” (*s-lam) is suspected to have entered Proto-Khmer as slam (today, Khmer sammɔk). Trade, not conquest, drove this exchange.
