The story begins at the Toldi estate. The mother constantly compares Miklós unfavorably to his brother György. She calls Miklós a "good-for-nothing" ox-herd. Angered by the constant scolding and the injustice, Miklós decides to leave home. Before he goes, he attempts to hug his mother, but she rejects him. In a rage, Miklós throws a whetstone (hence: fenyítő kő) onto the roof, vowing it will only come down when he is a great man.

His biggest enemy is his own older brother, György Toldi. György is jealous. He spreads lies about Miklós, saying he is violent and dangerous. Finally, after a huge argument, Miklós has to run away from home to save his life.

Miklós wanders alone through the huge, muddy Great Plain (Alföld). He is sad, tired, and hungry. He has only one hope left: to ask for help from King Louis the Great (Nagy Lajos), who lives in Vienna (or in Buda, depending on the story). The story begins at the Toldi estate

On the way, he meets an old, mysterious man who gives him good advice. He also finds a loyal friend: a huge, strong ox that follows him like a dog!

Finally, he reaches the king’s court. But the guards laugh at him because he looks like a dirty, poor peasant. They won’t let him in. Angered by the constant scolding and the injustice,
