Testing on a 5 MP Logitech C270, Python implementation:
You don't need to guess. Use this simple 2-step formula to find your ideal lens.
Step 1: Define your "Capture Width" How wide of an area do you need to show? webcam filedot
Step 2: Measure your distance Measure from the webcam lens to your face (typically 24-30 inches for a desk).
The Formula:
FOV (degrees) = 2 × arctan( (Capture Width / 2) / Distance )
Simplified rule of thumb:
In manufacturing, a webcam over a workstation watches for filedot markers on circuit boards. When a dot is detected, the system overlays digital instructions onto the worker’s monitor and saves a before/after image file. This ensures quality control at every step.
For a 90° webcam, you must sit at least 3 feet (1 meter) away to avoid distortion. For 110°, you need 4-5 feet. If your desk is shallow (under 24 inches deep), a wide FOV will make you look like a caricature. Testing on a 5 MP Logitech C270, Python
Pro Tip: Look for webcams that advertise "Distortion Correction" or "Lens Shift Technology" (like the Insta360 Link or Razer Kiyo Pro). These use software or glass hybrid lenses to flatten the image.
