Welding Standard Asme -

End of Report

ASME Section IX requires each welder to pass a test using a specific WPS. The test coupon is examined visually and then via mechanical tests (bend tests or radiography).

Key rules:

Pro tip: Many fabricators maintain a "continuous log" to prove welders have worked within the six-month window. welding standard asme

To legally use the ASME welding standard in fabrication, you need an ASME Certificate of Authorization and the appropriate Code Symbol Stamp.

Steps:

Objective: Qualify a WPS for root pass GTAW (ER70S-2) and fill passes SMAW (E7018) on 2” thick carbon steel. End of Report

Steps per ASME IX:

  • Record PQR: Includes all essential variables: F-No. 6 (GTAW), F-No. 4 (SMAW), A-No. 1, thickness 2”.
  • Generate WPS: Lists ranges – thickness 1” to unlimited (since test > 1”). Preheat 50°F min, PWHT 1150°F.
  • Qualify welders: Each welder runs a 2” thick test with same process combination; passes bend test.
  • Result: WPS and WPQs are valid for 3 years (or until changes in essential variables).

One of the most powerful concepts in the ASME welding standard is the distinction between essential variables and non-essential variables (found in Table QW-250). ASME Section IX requires each welder to pass

Supplemental Essential Variables apply when impact testing is required (e.g., for low-temperature service). These include heat input limits and interpass temperature controls.

To qualify a WPS, test coupons must pass: | Test Type | Applicability | Acceptance Criteria | |-----------|---------------|----------------------| | Tensile Test (QW-150) | All procedures | Ultimate tensile strength ≥ specified base metal minimum | | Guided Bend Test (QW-160) | All procedures (except impact-tested) | No open defects > 1/8” in bend direction | | Fillet Weld Break Test (QW-180) | Fillet welds only | Complete fusion at root; no visible cracks | | Impact Test (QW-170) | When required by design code (e.g., Section VIII Div. 1) | Minimum absorbed energy (e.g., 20 ft-lbf at -20°F) |
