Set in the pre-independence era of the 1940s, Kabzaa follows the journey of Arkeshwara, an air force pilot who enters the dark world of crime due to unavoidable circumstances. The narrative explores his rise from a common man to a feared gangster, set against a backdrop of political unrest and power struggles in the fictional city of Amarapura.

The Indian film industry has seen a massive surge in period gangster dramas over the last few years, largely popularized by the KGF franchise. Stepping into this arena is Kabzaa, a 2023 Kannada-language film written and directed by R. Chandru. Starring Upendra, Kichcha Sudeep, and Shriya Saran, the film promised to be a visual spectacle. But does it live up to the hype?

Upendra delivers a powerful performance as the protagonist. His transformation from a disciplined pilot to a ruthless don is portrayed with conviction. He brings a certain gravitas to the role that keeps the audience engaged even when the pacing falters.

Kichcha Sudeep, who plays Bhargav Bakshi, has a shorter screen time than fans might expect, but his presence is impactful. Shriya Saran performs her role admirably, though the character arc for the female lead often feels sidelined in favor of the male-dominated action.

Ravi Basrur, known for his work on KGF, handles the music. While the background score is thunderous and elevates the mass moments, it sometimes feels overwhelming, constantly signaling to the audience how they should feel during a scene.

If there is one area where Kabzaa undeniably shines, it is its visual grandeur. Cinematographer A. J. Shetty has done a commendable job capturing the essence of the period. The color palette is dark and gritty, with large-scale sets and sweeping shots that aim to give the film a pan-India feel. The action sequences are choreographed with a high intensity that fans of the genre will appreciate.
