The series begins with the tragedy of Karbala (Ashura), where Imam Hussain and 72 companions are slaughtered by the Umayyad army under Ubayd Allah ibn Ziyad. Mokhtar, who was not present at Karbala but had been imprisoned by Ibn Ziyad, survives and later escapes.

After the death of Yazid (the Umayyad caliph), Mokhtar returns to Kufa and begins a secret campaign to rally supporters of the Prophet’s family (the Shi’at Ali).
